Asparagus

Common Name: Asparagus

Latin Name: Asparagus officinalis

Description: Plant 30cm apart in light soil with lots of organic matter and fertiliser added. Allow to die down in winter to produce new shoots in spring. Can produce spears for many years.

Harvesting: Resist harvesting in first spring. Harvest every two days for up to ten weeks.

Best Results: Grow in full sun and water regularly. Dress acid soils with lime. Use high nitrogen fertiliser regularly.

Uses: Store in fridge. Steam or blanch for 2 minutes. Can be frozen.

Companion: Plant with tomatoes to repel pests.
