Common Name: Chives – Garlic
Latin Name: Allium tuberosum
Description: Also called Chinese Chives. Garlic & onion flavoured, grass-like stems with slender bulbs and decorative white blossoms in summer. Garlic chives cope quite well in winter but, if they do die down they will come back again in spring. Perennial. 15cm.
Harvesting: Harvest frequently by snipping quite low with scissors. Try not to harvest the whole plant at once as this may exhaust it.
Best Results: Best used fresh or finely chopped and frozen.
Uses: Use leaves for mild garlic flavour in all styles of cooking. Flowers and leaves are especially popular in Asian cuisine.
Companion: Companions for roses, tomatoes and fruit trees to help deter insects.
