Common Name: Garlic
Latin Name: Allium sativum
Description: Bulb forms underground whilst long, strappy stems grow to around 1 metre in height.
Harvesting: Harvest garlic once the stem has started to die down – around 6 months after planting. Pull one bulb and check the size before harvesting the rest. Young garlic can be harvested early and the rest as required.
Best Results: Grow garlic in full sun and after harvesting, plait the leaves and hang in a dry, dark place. For how to plant, check out our ‘Growing Garlic’ fact sheet un Growing Herbs.
Uses: Garlic can be used in casseroles and dressings but is also delicious mixed with butter for bread and steaks. When cooking garlic, don’t allow it to burn or darken as the flavour will become bitter.
Companion: Plant garlic with roses or other vegetables to repel aphids and to improve the fragrance of flowers.
