Common Name: Rhubarb Victorian
Latin Name: Rheum rhabarbarum
Description: Long, mostly green stems with some crimson colouration. Vigorous, producing large number of stems. Shade tolerant. Perennial. Height to 1m.
Harvesting: Harvest outside stems as required, cutting down low with knife. Discard leaves as these are poisonous but don’t feed these to poultry.
Best Results: Keep well watered. Add compost or manure to base of plant regularly. Grow in full to part sun in rich, well drained soil. Suitable for large containers.
Uses: Stems cooked for pies and delicious with apple or pear. Leaves are not edible. Do not add leaves to compost or feed to animals.
Companion: Good companion to all brassicas as well as onions and beans.
